History - The Station Masters House

1876
In July the land was sold to a John Thomas Matthews
1893
In November he instructed Auctioneers in Penzance to sell
1893
In December, three plots of land of which Porthminster View was one plot, was sold to a local builder Robert Toy for £192.00
1896
On 9th July, Robert Toy the builder sold the new house to Charles Lousie Williams and his wife Catherine for £640.00. They named their house Porthmeor House.

Charles Lousie Williams who was born in Portreath in 1852 was the first Station Master at the new St Ives Railway Station. He was Station Master from 1877 (when it first opened) until his retirement in 1912 at the age of 60. (Some 35 years). Sadly his wife known as Kate died on 20th November 1918.
1934
Charles Lousie Williams continued to live in the house until his death on 20th November 1934.
1935
His son Richard, a Lloyds Bank Manager in Truro inherited the house, but sold it in 1935 for £1,325.00 to Harry Rogers.
1938
In June the house was leased out to Miss Irene Rouncefield for 7 years at a yearly rent of £75.00. She then starts trading as a guest house under the name of Porthmeor Guest House.
1942
The house then changed hands within the new owners family
1946
The owner then gave the house as a free gift to her daughter Kitty Hall but is still leased out to Miss Rouncefield.
1948
On 14th April Kitty Hall died and the house is placed into a trust.
1951
The lessee Irene Rouncefield goes into partnership with Mrs Proudfoot, still trading as Porthmeor Guest House.
1967
The deceased owner's house is sold to a Master Mariner Captain Dennis Proudfoot, the son of Mrs Proudfoot for £4,250.00.
1976

Captain Proudfoot sold the house for £19,000.00. The new owner Daisy Beaument from Essex continues to trade as a guest house but changed the name to Porthminster View.

1981
The house sold again for £39,500 to Trevor and Margaret Williams. Still trading as a guest house.
1998
Christine and David Hodge purchased the house and continue to run it as a Guest House. (We cannot remember what we paid for it!) they are the 8th owners of Porthminster View, a beautiful Victorian house which has an outstanding view of the town with its harbour and beaches.

STRANGE BUT TRUE

1.
Both Charles and Kate Williams died on 20th November. Kate in 1918 and Charles in 1934.
2.
The maiden name of the first lady of this house was Hodge, known as Kate Hodge. It is the same pet name of our daughter - Kate Hodge.
